Harald Nome Obituary

Aug 28, 1926 - Jan 24, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
Harald Nome, 90, of Avon, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2016, with his family by his side. Harald was born on August 27, 1926 in Staten Island, NY to Jenny and Andreas Nome. He served in the Navy during WWII and then earned a Mechanical Engineering degree from Steven Institute of Technology. It was at his first job with M.W. Kellogg, in New York, that he met his future bride, a young lady named Grace Matte. They shared 50 wonderful years together, with Gracie in the limelight and Harald more comfortable in the background. They were a perfect match - Grace the lively spitfire and Harald the reserved gentleman at her side. Harald and Grace began their family on Long Island, but spent most of their lives in Bloomfield, while he worked at Hamilton Standard and Combustion Engineering. Harald was most proud of the work he did at Hamilton Standard on the Lunar Lander and related space equipment, but Harald's selflessness also led him to a lifetime of public service. He served on the Bloomfield Town Plan and Zoning Commission, as well as the Inland and Wetlands Commission for many years, ensuring that future generations would enjoy the town he loved so much. While his children were young, Harald was an enthusiastic leader with the YMCA Indian Guides and the Boy Scouts. Harald also loved photography and eventually became the unofficial photographer for The Connecticut Food Association, which Grace was the president of. A man of great character and kindness, Harald was well liked by everyone who met him. He set a wonderful example for his children and grandchildren. Harald was predeceased by his wife Grace, his daughter Janis and his brother Ray. He leaves behind to mourn his passing his children Mark Nome, of Durham, NC, Jenna Nome of Newington, and Diane Roach and her husband Michael of Avon. He leaves grandchildren Andrew, Erik and Ben Nome, Jennifer and Allyson Roach and Meg O'Connor, as well as many nieces, nephews and brother and sisters in law. Services will be private and his ashes will be interred at the Memorial Garden at Simsbury United Methodist Church. The garden was started in memory of Grace and Janis and now serves as a resting place for many church and community members. The family would like to thank all the people involved in Harald's care over the years, but especially Dr. Herbert Keating and his staff in Bloomfield and the amazing staff at Apple Rehab in Avon, who made his last days as comforting as possible. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Simsbury United Methodist Church Memorial Garden, 799 Hopmeadow Street, Simsbury, CT, 06070, or to the fund established to restore Filley Park in Bloomfield. Checks for the restoration should be made out to Town of Bloomfield/Filley Park and mailed to Friends of Filley Park, P.O. Box 170, Bloomfield, CT 06002. Of course, donations to any charity of the donor's choosing would be welcome and appreciated. The Carmon Funeral Home of Avon is caring for the arrangements.
