HAROLD CLYDE BUCK, 91 SAVANNA - Harold Clyde Buck, age 91, of Savanna, IL., died Wednesday, July 22, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center, Clinton, IA. Harold was born on June 4, 1924 at the home, the son of Lark and Iva (Gibbons) Buck in Beardstown, IL. He graduated from Beardstown High School, lettering in 3 sports. On December 31, 1944, Harold married Muriel Nicol; they celebrated 70 years of marriage. Harold started his work life on the railroad in Beardstown; he also worked as a civil servant at Camp Ellis during WWII. He drove truck, farmed, and also worked for the Nicol Sand Co. Later he became a Critic Feed Dealer, and in 1950 he took employment as an Area Sales Manager for Kent Feeds. Harold served Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin in this position for 34 years. Harold served on the Carroll County Health Board and the Carroll County Housing Authority. He was a member of the Rotary Club for many years, serving as past President and also as District Governor for 45 clubs in Western Illinois in 1978 to 1979. He served on the Savanna School Board and Savanna Hospital Board as past President. He served on the Savanna Planning Commission for 20 years as past President and Chairman. He was active in St. Peter's Lutheran Church as past Chairman and member of the Building Committee for the new Church in 1950. Harold moved his family to Freeport, IL., in 1955 so the children could attend Immanuel Lutheran School. He served Immanuel Lutheran Church as Chairman of the congregation and Sunday School teacher as well as School Board member and past President. Harold is probably remembered most at Immanuel Lutheran School as Lay Coach for basketball, flag football, and softball. He was named Y.M.C.A. "Man of the Year" in 1961. He was a basketball and football referee for area high schools and colleges for many years. He attended the IHSA State Basketball Tournament for the past 50 years. Harold enjoyed traveling. He and his wife visited many countries through Kent Feeds and the Rotary Club. He was an avid fisherman and hunter-often referred to as "Clyde the Guide". He loved flowers, and had a beautiful flower garden. Harold will be greatly missed by his wife, Muriel; his sons, Scott (Jane) Buck of Davis, IL., Lowell (Diane) Buck of Pearl City, IL., Harold (Barbara) Buck of Brandon, SD., and Timothy (Linda) Buck of Dunlap, IL.; 10 grandchildren, Christine (Bud) Windleborn, Joel (Lisa) Buck, Kellie (Jason) Higgins, Tara McGuane, Daniel (Jennifer) Buck, Angela (Joe) Smeck, Sarah (Marshall) Nehring, Kimberly (Kenneth) McCuen, Rebecca Buck and Amanda (Eric) Polcyn; 14 great-grandchildren; and 1 sister, Dorothy Taylor. Harold is preceded in death by his parents, Lark and Iva; his brother, Floyd; brother-in-law, Jim Taylor, and sister-in-law, Deanna Buck. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 26, 2015 at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Savanna. Burial will take place in St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 25, 2015 at Law-Jones Funeral Home, Savanna. Online condolences may be left for the family at lawjonesfuneralhome.com.
