Harold "Chuck" G. Wood, 89, of Wheatfield, passed away on Friday, Jan. 22, 2016, at the VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso. Chuck was born on Aug. 5, 1926, in Chanute, Kansas, the son of William W. and Lola Alice (Newton) Wood.Chuck was a graduate of the Chanute High School, the class of 1946. Chuck served his country proudly in the United States Army during the Korean War. On Aug. 28, 1949, in Chanute, Kansas, Chuck married Gladys Alene Dimon, who survives. Chuck had managed a gas station for 21 years, which was located on the corner of 169th and Kennedy Ave in Hammond. He had also worked as a mechanic for General Drainage in Gary. In 2003 at the age of 77 Chuck retired from working for Woolever Farms in Wheatfield as a farm hand. Chuck enjoyed volunteering with the Jasper County 4-H where he was the project leader, including small engines, horse and pony and PET PALS. Chuck was known to many of the 4-H'rs as "Grandpa." His hobbies included leather crafts and woodworking. Chuck loved horses and dogs. During his later years he volunteered with his daughter Del at the local libraries doing Humane Education.Chuck is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Gladys; children, Michael (Nancy) Wood of Portage, Terry (Vonnie) Wood of Tennessee, Del (Ed) Cleek of Wheatfield and Lonny (Kim) Wood of Travaris, Florida; 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren.Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, one son Danny Wood and one sister Alice Arlene Metcalf. Friends are invited to visit with the family on Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016, from 1 to 3 p.m. (CST) at the Jackson Funeral Service, DeMotte. A celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, Jan. 31, at 3 p.m. (CST) at the Jackson Funeral Service of DeMotte. Cremains will be interred at a later date in the Veteran Section of the Chapel Lawn Cemetery, Schererville.In celebration of Chuck's wonderful life, the family requests that you wear bib overalls, any farm attire that you may have, or a favorite farm products baseball cap.In leiu of flowers ,memorial contributions may be made to the Jasper County 4-H and/or The VNA Hospice.
