Harvey Leon Mathers, Sr., 88, of Lubbock, formally of Alamogordo, New Mexico, passed away on Monday, September 4, 2017 in his home. He was born on January 3, 1929 in White County, Arkansas to Alvin James and Josie Elizabeth (Abbott) Mathers. He married Luola Bass on January 28, 1946 in Beebe Arkansas, together they began their family. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church of Alamogordo, New Mexico. He worked in the open pit copper mines of Santa Rita, New Mexico for 17 years and then worked with the Civil Service at Hollman Air Force Base as a heavy equipment operator for 27 years. During his time with Hollman Air Force Base he was given several commendations for his work. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife; Luola Mathers of Lubbock; two sons, Leon Mathers and his wife Sandra of Lubbock and Charles Mathers and his wife Christine of Bear, Delaware; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Donald Ray Mathers and seven siblings. Celebration of life services will be held on Thursday, September 7, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. at Combest Family Memorial Chapel of Lubbock, and on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home of Alamogordo, with burial to take place at Monte Vista Cemetery.
