Hazel Batchelor Garris GRIFTON - Hazel Batchelor Garris, 72, of Grifton, passed away on November 4, 2016 at Vidant Inpatient Hospice in Greenville. She was born on September 21, 1944 in Newport News, VA to Jarvis and Effie Batchelor. Hazel was preceded in death by both parents, her loving husband, Milton Garris and a younger sister, Jackie Batchelor. Hazel spent her youngest years in Rocky Mount, until the family moved to Grifton. She graduated from Grifton High School in 1962. She spent her entire career in the Banking Industry, working with First Citizens Bank from 1973 to 2001. In 2001 she went to work for Southern Bank and remained there until her retirement in 2008. Hazel was a dedicated employee and held many positions within the bank including Teller, Customer Service Representative and Executive Secretary. She finished her career specializing in Training. Although she held many roles at the bank, her most important role in life was that of a loving mother and grandmother. Her career was important; but she hardly ever missed a horse show, dance recital, gymnastics competition, baseball game or hockey game. She was her family's biggest cheerleader and no doubt was genuinely her happiest during those times. She was an avid dancer and for many years was a member of the Eastern North Carolina Shag Club. Hazel attended Elm Grove FWB Church. Hazel is survived by her only daughter, Heather Ziegler and husband, Mark, of Winterville, two grandchildren, Devin Mizelle and Rusty Ziegler and one sister, Joyce Harris and husband, Roger, of Grifton. She also leaves behind a newphew, Michael Harris and wife Melissa, and a niece Valerie Penuel and husband John all of Grifton. Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday November 9, 2016 at 2:00pm at Farmer Funeral Service-Ayden. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Estates in Grifton. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1-2pm at the funeral home. You may send online condolences to farmerfuneralservice.com.
