SomersetLedford, Hazel P.,97, passed away Saturday, November 5, 2016 at the Jean Waddle Care Center in Somerset, KY. Hazel was born on May 9, 1919 in Somerset to the late William Robert Perkins and Zula Richardson Perkins. Hazel was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she assisted with Bible School and was a member of the Glen Gover Sunday School class. She was a 1940 graduate of the University of Kentucky and earned her degree in Library Science. She taught at Lloyd High School in Erlanger, KY from 1940-1942 and then came back to Somerset and worked for Farmers National Bank. Hazel was involved with the Better Way Homemakers, Somerset Chapter Daughters of American Revolution, Pulaski County Historical Society, member of The Chautauqua Circle, University of Kentucky Alumni Association, and a former member of the Somerset Pulaski County Library Board. For many years, she and her husband, Herb, served as chaperones and band boosters for Somerset High School. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert R. Ledford, who she married in Somerset on July 14, 1943 and a great-granddaughter, Caroline Clay Vitale.Hazel is survived by four daughters, Jane Shelton of Oak Ridge, TN, Alice Frields (Bob) of Henderson, KY, Emily Lawrence (Tom) of Louisville, KY and Sarah Byers (Rob) of Simpsonville, KY; four grandchildren, Elaine Frields Thomas (Ken) of East Greenwich, RI, Elizabeth Vitale (David) of Cincinnati, OH, Margaret Lawrence of Louisville, KY and Matthew Frields of Henderson, KY; and two great-grandchildren, Grant Thomas of Auburn, AL and Emma Thomas of Lexington, KY.Visitation for Hazel Perkins Ledford will be held on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 from 4-7 p.m. at the Chapel of Somerset Undertaking Company and Crematory. A celebration of life honoring Hazel will be held on Thursday, November 10, 2016 at 11 a.m. at The First United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Spitzer officiating. A one hour visitation will precede the service. Interment will be at Somerset Cemetery.The family requests expressions of sympathy take the form of donations to the Caroline Clay Vitale Memorial Fund to help support perinatal research at Cincinnati Children's Hospital.
