Dr. Heinz O. H. Zunker 1924-2016Dr. Heinz O. H. Zunker died peacefully in Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital on September 23, 2016 from complications related to Parkinson's disease. He was 92.Dr. Zunker was born on May 27, 1924 in Berlin Germany. He graduated magna cum laude from the Frei Universitat in Berlin with a degree in medicine and moved to New York City where he taught and conducted research in the Department of Pathology at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. In New York he met Sigrid Salong and they married in 1963. Shortly before their second child was born, they moved to Evansville, Indiana, where Dr. Zunker was chief of pathology at Deaconess Hospital, and then to Beaumont, Texas, where he was chief of pathology at Beaumont Medical Surgical Hospital and at Saint Elizabeth's Hospital. All his life Dr. Zunker was a passionate advocate for healthy eating and exercise. He was an avid jogger who ran the New York Marathon when he was in his 70's and he regularly participated in the MS 150, an annual bike ride from Houston to Austin, Texas. After he retired from practicing medicine, he volunteered for Doctor's Without Borders in Cochabamba Bolivia and he also travelled extensively for pleasure. When at home he lovingly tended to his garden. Dr. Zunker was fluent in four languages and he enjoyed using each of them to talk with people about the importance of a healthy diet and exercise, and about his travels, and his children. Dr. Zunker is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Derek and Alecia Zunker of Denver, Colorado; his daughter and son-in-law, Christina and Jim Donnell of New York, New York; his two grandchildren Zoe and Andrew; and his ex-wife Sigrid.A private memorial service will be held for family.
