Helen Ruth BeckABILENE, TXHelen Ruth Lanham Beck, affectionately known as Granny, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 19, 2016. She was 92 years young and lived with an undaunted spirit and love for life. Visitation will be held at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Hwy 277 South, from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Monday, November 21, 2016. Graveside services will be held in San Saba, TX on Tuesday, November 22 at 11:00 AM. Helen was born on the family farm in San Saba, TX on February 12, 1924 to Ella Alletha and John Lewis Lanham. She met the love of her life, Robert "Hugh" Beck, in the band at San Saba High School. Hugh was head over heels for Helen Ruth and learned how to play one of her favorite songs, Deep Purple, by Peter DeRose. Their souls were united in Holy Matrimony on December 29, 1942. They were happily married for 44 years. She graduated from the
University of Texas with a BBA in Accounting and a minor in Education in June of 1945. They remained in Austin until Hugh graduated in 1949 after returning from World War II. From Austin they moved to Littlefield, TX where Helen taught 3rd grade. In 1950 they moved to their permanent home in Abilene, TX. During this time she was a homemaker supporting her 3 children in their various activities and was always involved in her community and her church. She was a dedicated member of St. Paul United Methodist Church since 1952. Helen worked as a substitute teacher for the Abilene Independent School District and then as an administrative assistant at St. John's Episcopal School. She was most proud of her ability to work and serve the parents and children of St. John's for 22 years until she retired at 82. Her loving nature always led her to put her faith, family and friends first in her life. She is preceded in death by her husband Hugh and her beloved daughter-in-law Mary Carolyn Beck. She leaves behind a legacy of unconditional love to her three children Bob Beck of Midland, TX, Dana Beck and wife Nancy of Iraan, TX and Toni Burger and husband Bill of Abilene, TX and her 9 grandchildren Zach Beck, Cole and Whitney Beck, Davis and Melissa Parker, Evan and Lauren Parker, John and Marisa Johnson, Courtney McCullough, Will Burger, Christian Burger, and Eric and Anna Davids. Helen was also very blessed to be surrounded by her 14 great grandchildren and cherished every moment. Honorary pallbearers are her grandsons. In lieu of flowers memorials can be given to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 525 Beach, Abilene, TX 79601 or St. John's Episcopal School, 1600 Sherman Drive, Abilene, TX 79605.
