Helena Sibyl Hitt Dwyer Charles, 99, of Lignum, VA died on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at Woodbine Rehabilitation and Healthcare in Alexandria, VA. She was born in Fauquier County on March 7, 1919, the last surviving child of the late Johnny Jackson Hitt and Laurelia Carrico Hitt.
Mrs. Charles was a retired seamstress and homemaker. She loved to crochet and gift her Afghans and dolls to family and friends.
She is survived by one son, Richard D. Dwyer and his wife, Carolyn of Elkwood; daughter-in-law, Nancy J. Dwyer of Culpeper; six grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 10 great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, George E. Dwyer; second husband, Thomas E. Charles; one daughter, Elizabeth “Betty” Hilton; two sons, Arthur E. Dwyer and George E. Dwyer, Jr.; one granddaughter, Tina H. Julian; and her eight siblings, Gladys Anderson, Harold Hitt, Tommy Hitt, Frank Hitt, Peggy Eline, Richard Hitt, Howard Hitt and Hazel Butler.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 1, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, VA with Pastor J. Lindsay Sadler, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
Interment will follow in Mt. Holly Baptist Church Cemetery in Remington.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to Richardsville Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad, 29361 Eleys Ford Rd., Richardsville, VA 22736.
