Henry Donald ToljNaples, FLHenry Donald Tolj "Don", 91, passed away on 17th, February, 2017 at Naples Community Hospital in Naples, Florida. He was born on December, 9th, 1925 in Baltimore, Maryland to Lawrence Walter and Caroline Agnes Telljohann Tolj. Don grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. He was a graduate of City College High School, in Baltimore. After high school he attended Washington College in Chestertown, MD before enlisting in the
Army Air Force where he served as a Radar Mechanic Navigator and was qualified as a Pistol Marksman during
WWII. After the war he returned to college at University of Maryland, College Park, where he earned a Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. Upon graduation he began work for Bendix Radio as a engineer in research and development where he and his team did pioneering work and were awarded patents on Doppler Radar. He was recruited by Westinghouse Electric BWI complex, as a systems designer for the AWACS and TWS systems developed and manufactured there. He retired in 1986.Don married Violet Jean Whittaker in 1952 in Wellsville, Ohio. They were happily married for 65 years. Don was a member of East Naples United Methodist Church. He enjoyed Playing Bridge and Pinochle with friends, reading mostly materials related to math, science and astrophysics. He was an avid horseman who owned several horses prior to his retirement. He enjoyed handicapping, racing and training his thoroughbreds. He liked to report that more than one of his horses had set track records.Don was preceded in death by his parents Lawrence Walter and Caroline Agnes, and his brother Lawrence Walter (Grace Baker) Tolj Jr. Don is survived by his spouse Violet of Naples, Florida; His sons Donald Tolj Jr. and Lawrence Wesley (Danile) Tolj his of Gloucester, VA.; His sister Lois (Larry) Amundson of Georgetown, Texas. His grandsons, Jesse, Alexandr, James; his great-grandchildren Luca and Lennon; and many nieces and nephews, and other relatives. A memorial service will be held at Hodges Funeral Home at Naples Memorial Gardens, 525 - 111th Ave, Naples, FL 34108 at 12:00 PM, February 25. Visitation for friends and family starts at 10:30 AM preceding the service. Internment will follow the service. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to East Naples Methodist Church, 2701 Airport Rd S, Naples, FL 34112 or the charity of your passion.
