Long time Anchorage, Alaska, resident Henry L. Sims, 86, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on Oct. 22, 2016.Henry was born on April 27, 1930, in Kountze, Texas. After graduating from high school, he served in the Army and then had a career in civil service, retiring in 1978.Henry loved to cook and entertain, often making special things for his friends. He loved music and spending time with his family. Henry was loved and adored by his wife, children and friends, who will miss him dearly.Henry is survived by his wife, Velma Sims; his children, Joyce Simmon (James Simmon), Sherri Gunn (Mike Unzeitig), Sheila Gunn, Sedrick Gunn and honorary son, Larry D.; grandchildren, Geanine Watty, Jaime McGills, Sade Thomas, Shavona Gunn and Dominic Gunn; sister ,Mary L. Freeman; brothers, Clarence O. Sims and James Sims; seven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.Henry was preceded in death by his mother and father, Walter J. Sims and Willie Mae Sims; four brothers; one sister; and his granddaughter, Unita Butler.A memorial service will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016, at Kehl's Legacy Funeral Home: 11621 Old Seward Hwy., Anchorage, AK 99515. A celebration of life will follow from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Embassy Suites Hotel: 600 East Benson Blvd, Anchorage, AK 99503.
