Herbert Byron BurnsEagle, MIHerb passed away on June 1, 2017. He was born on December 8, 1937, in Lansing, MI. Herb graduated from Ovid High School. He received a Bachelor of Science from Grand Valley State University. He began working as a Conservation Officer in 1966 with the Department of Conservation. In 1970, he was appointed Area Law Supervisor in the Grand Rapids District. He was promoted to the Cadillac District office as District Law Supervisor. In Cadillac, he met his wife Anka "Mickey" Stojic. In 1984, he was named Assistant Law Enforcement Chief and began working in Lansing. In 1985, he was appointed Chief of the Law Enforcement Division in the Department of Natural Resources. He served in that role until his retirement in 2000 after a 34-year career. Throughout his career, Herb greatly contributed to protecting and promoting natural resources. He received the Shikar-Safari Award for Wildlife Officer of the Year in 1973. For his contributions to law enforcement and for supporting the "Becoming an Outdoors Woman" program, Herb received the President's Award from the Women Police of Michigan in 1995. In 2014, he was honored by having a DNR patrol vessel named after him at the U.S. Coast Guard Station in Manistee. Herb was a lifelong outdoorsman and loved fishing, hunting, camping, hiking and canoeing. He also enjoyed painting, wood carving and bird watching. Herb was a member and trustee at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.He was preceded in death by his son, Mark Burns, and his parents. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Anka; children Erik (Linda) Burns of Greensburg, PA, Nathan Burns of Maple City, MI, Sarah Davis of East Lansing, MI; and mother-in-law, Josephine Stojic of Cadillac, MI. He is also survived by two grandchildren, Logan and Alexandra; and many loving friends and family members. The family extends special thanks to caregivers Lola Meeder, Jasmine Smith, and Eagle's Nest AFC. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 17, at 12:00 p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 7000 W. Saginaw Highway, Lansing, with Rev. Roger Straub officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00-12:00 prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the MUCC Youth Camp (MUCC Memorial Fund, P.O.
