Herbert "Herbie" H. Daniel Jr. died at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital on July 26, 2014, in Fairbanks, Alaska at the age of 63. Herbie was born on June 11, 1951, in Atlanta, Georgia to Herbert H. Daniel Sr. and Nancy "Shirley" Daniel. He graduated from Lathrop High School in 1969. Following high school Herbie attended The UAF Community and Technical College of Aviation Maintenance where he received a degree as an A&P Mechanic. He began working for Auto Service Company as a mechanic, eventually becoming the service manager. Herb's career at Auto Service Company spanned 32 years, during which time he worked with many loyal friends and customers. Herbie was a skilled mechanic whose passion and career overlapped seamlessly. Rarely without a tool in his hand, Herb loved building race cars with friends. He was happiest at the track or at a ball field watching his children play sports. He was a very generous person, always thinking of others first and willing to lend a helping hand. Herb was a wonderful father who offered his children unwavering support and encouragement, constantly reminding them that in life silliness and levity carry the same weight as seriousness. Herbie was best known for his unique sense of humor. He made many laugh with his Herbisms, which will live on for generations to come. He will be dearly missed but never forgotten.Herbie is survived by his mother Nancy Shirley Daniel; his children Lindsey and Jamie Daniel; his siblings Nancy Ketzler-Haskins and husband Tom Haskins, Theresa Heitman, David Daniel, Mel Hilborn, Wayne Daniel, sister-in-law Marietta Daniel, and the Porter family; his nephews and nieces, Cosmo Ketzler, Dustin Ketzler and wife Vanessa, Jesse Ketzler, Natilly Hovda, Reneé Daniel, Ryan Daniel, Sarah Heitman, Rachel Heitman, Gracie Heitman, Gerek Heitman. And his dear friends, among them Tom, Cindy and Riley Stadt, Al and Nancy Trettel, Dale Childers, Gary Childers, and Gary Hein. He is preceded in death by his father Herbert Harry Daniel Sr., his stepfather Cliff Porter, his brother Edward Daniel, and his brother-in-law Don Ketzler.A service is scheduled for Sunday, August 10 at 2 p.m. at the Northern Light Freewill Baptist Church, 11 Mile Richardson Hwy, North Pole with a potluck celebration of life to follow at The Badger Den at 4:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Herbie's life.
