Johnson, Hildegarde D. Hildegarde D. Johnson passed away in Chandler, AZ, on May 23, 2017. She was born on Sept. 12, 1917, to Marvin Alvin Dawson and Nettie Turner Dawson in Glendale, AZ. She was 99. Hildegarde graduated from Arizona State University in 1938 when it was known as the Arizona State Teacher's College. She taught elementary education in Phoenix public schools for more than three decades and retired in 1973. She was a long-time member of Sigma Phi Gamma International Sorority. She was also an active member of the Washington Garden Club in Phoenix and The Salvation Army Auxiliary for many years. Aside from her volunteer work, she was a talented artist, crafter, quilter and crocheter. She left behind numerous treasures that will be enjoyed by family and friends for years to come. She was also well traveled with visits to all 50 states and many countries. With almost 100 years of life experiences to her credit, she led an adventurous life and always loved to share her many stories. Her quick wit, sense of humor and creativity will be missed by all who loved her. She was preceded in death by her husband Bernard Johnson, stepdaughter Sharon Hughes, granddaughter Michele Tucker and grandson David Hughes. She is survived by her five stepchildren Daun Johnson (Janice), Joyce Freeman, Julia Harris (Russell), Dale Johnson (Pam) and Lynette Johnson (Jerry). She is also survived by 26 grandchildren and more than 100 great and great great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Salvation Army, 2707 E. Van Buren St., Phoenix, AZ, 85008, or to . Funeral services will be held on Sat., June 3, 2017, at Greenwood Memory Lawn, 719 N. 27th Ave. in Phoenix, AZ. A viewing will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. with a memorial service to follow in the chapel.
