LAWRENCEBURG -Hubert Johnson Shields, 85, passed away on September 22, 2016 at Heritage Hall in Lawrenceburg. Hubert was born on November 9, 1930 in Nelson County. He was raised by his grandparents, the late Hubert and Rose (Sweazy) Shields. He grew up in Nelson County and graduated from Bloomfield High in 1947. He was married to Marjorie Jean (Jeannie) Baxter Shields for almost 60 years. Their life together began on a farm in Nelson County. In 1951 he was chosen as one of eight men to represent KY at the Future Farmers of America National Convention in Missouri. After selling their farm they moved to Anderson County where he sold cars for a few years before beginning employment for the state of KY in Frankfort. After leaving the state he began working for Square D in Lexington, where he retired after 31 years of service. During his tenure at Square D he served as head of the data processing department as well as president of the Square D Credit Union for several years. He also worked with Junior Achievement and taught night classes at a local vocational school. After retirement he was a realtor with Birdwhistell and Perry in Anderson County. He served Anderson County as magistrate for 8 1/2 years, resigning his position to care for his ailing wife for four years, until her death in 2010. Hubert was a faithful member of First Christian Church in Lawrenceburg where he served as Chairman of the Board, Sunday school teacher, and elder. He enjoyed playing croquet and Rook. Hubert was a winner in the doubles croquet tournament at the Bluegrass State Games as well as many other tournaments held across the state. He was also a member and president of the Kentucky Croquet Hall of Fame. Survivors are one daughter, Sherrill Stockton (Wayne), of Lawrenceburg, KY; one son, Douglas Shields (Cherie) of Union, KY; six grandchildren, Sarah Shirley (Tommy) of Harrodsburg, KY; Joshua Shields of Lexington, KY; Jensen Shields of Union, KY; Jonah Shields of Union, KY; Doug Stockton (Teri Jean) of Lawrenceburg, KY; David Stockton (Sara) of Frankfort, KY; seven great-grandchildren, Kobie and Cooper Shirley of Harrodsburg, KY; Michael Shields of Lawrenceburg, KY; T.W. and Brice Stockton of Lawrenceburg, KY; and Chloe and Kinsley Stockton of Frankfort, KY. He is also survived by a special friend, Betty Benningfield of Lawrenceburg, KY. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his four year old daughter, Kathy Shields. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 25, 2016 at Gash Memorial Chapel with Rev. Jim Wheeler officiating. Burial will follow in the Lawrenceburg Cemetery. Visitation 4-7 p.m. Saturday.
