Hugh offered leadership throughout his life, including as student body president of Orangeburg high school. He graduated from Furman University in 1967. After graduation from Furman, Hugh sensed God's direction and completed a Masters of Divinity at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary to prepare for ministry.During Hugh's seminary years he met & then married Vickie Newton Tart of Zebulon, NC (daughter of C.V. & Lois Tart). Together they enjoyed many years of blessings both professionally and personally. Hugh served in ministry at Dunwoody Baptist Church in Atlanta, as Baptist Campus minister in Spartanburg, SC, and as pastor at Grassy Pond Baptist church in Gaffney, SC. Hugh was senior pastor at Immanuel Baptist Church in Greenville, NC for the last 22 years of his career & Vickie taught math at J.H. Rose High school for 23 years. After they both retired, they moved to Cary, NC in 2010 to be close to children and grandchildren.Hugh's golf enthusiasm was a lifelong healthy addiction to the sport. The game and the friendships it nurtured brought great joy to Hugh & his playing partners. His closest friends and son appreciate the innumerable good times on the course.Hugh enjoyed games and fellowship with others. He read constantly, often with a focus on improving himself and with an intent to further his ability to communicate God's message to others as a disciple of Christ.Hugh's last years in Cary close to family provided him the opportunity to play his greatest role – that of grandfather. "Pa B" was a playful, energetic companion to his 5 grandchildren, and relished hosting them at his pool, where he was active off the diving board. He was a teacher and mentor to his grandchildren, and a friend of his children. He lived "with eyes fixed not on what is seen, but what is unseen, for what is unseen is eternal." He lived his final months battling an aggressive brain tumor with grace and strength and without fear. A memorial service will be held at First united Methodist Church in Cary at 4pm on Sunday 2/28 with visitation immediately after at Brown Wynne funeral home in Cary.Memorial gifts may be made to either Immanuel Baptist Church (1101 E.
