CHEEK, Hugh Wallace Hugh Wallace Cheek peacefully passed away at home on December 6, 2016. The son of Omar R. and Georgie Duvall Cheek, he was born on September 12, 1923 in East Point, Georgia where he spent his childhood years. Upon graduation from Russell High School, he attended Mercer University on scholarship where he received his undergraduate degree in Psychology. He received a Master's Degree in Psychology from the University of Kentucky. While attending Mercer University, he was drafted into the United States Army and served in the 90th Photo Reconnaissance wing in North Africa and Italy. He began his career in Milledgeville, GA as a counselor at Georgia Training School for Boys. He also taught biology at Georgia Military College. He later became the Director of Public Relations and an assistant professor of Psychology at Georgia State College for Women (Georgia College and State University). He was a member of the Alpha Beta chapter of Kappa Sigma fraternity, the Georgia Psychological Association, the Southeastern Psychological Association and the Milledgeville Historic Preservation Commission where he was active in reviewing and helping to rewrite the historic preservation code for the city. Hugh served as a deacon in the First Baptist Church of Milledgeville and was active in many civic affairs with the Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club, and the Historic Preservation Commission. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Paschal Chapman Cheek. He is survived by his wife, Laura Major Troy Cheek, daughter Paschal Cheek Lietc and husband, Joe, grandson Richard Ellis Jordan II and fianc?, Natalie, and several cousins. Visitation will be on Friday, December 9, in the chapel of Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church in Atlanta at 10 a.m. with a memorial service at 11. On Saturday, December 10, there will be visitation at Moores Funeral Home in Milledgeville from 12 p.m. 1 p.m. with a service in the chapel at 1 p.m. Burial immediately following the service at Memory Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Hugh may be made to Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, Atlanta, First Baptist Church of Milledgeville or the . The family is grateful for the loving care provided to Hugh during his illness by Jenkins Beyan, Stephen Jama, Paulina Hampton, Marjorie Loban, Kadan Homecare, Metta Johnson and Associates and Bridgeway Hospice.
