In Loving Memory of Huizhen Zou
Huizhen Zou, a beloved wife, mother, teacher, and friend, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of June 30, 2023, in Sacramento, California. She was 83 years old. Huizhen's departure leaves a profound void in the lives of those who knew and loved her, but her memory will forever be cherished.
Born on June 3, 1940, in Fuzhou, Fujian, China, Huizhen was the cherished daughter of the late Mr. Jiang Zhonghuan and Mrs. Zhou Ximei. After completing her education at Fuzhou Sixth Middle School, she pursued her passion for education and obtained a teaching credential from Fuzhou Kindergarten Normal School in 1961. That same year, she married her beloved husband, Laiyu Zou. Together, they embarked on a remarkable journey that would take them across continents.
In 1982, Huizhen and her family migrated to the United States, initially settling in San Rafael, California, before making their way to New York. Eventually, they found their permanent home in Sacramento in 1987.
Huizhen devoted a significant portion of her life to the noble profession of teaching. She began her teaching career at Fuzhou Second Kindergarten in 1961. In 1962 and for the next 20 years, Huizhen shared her knowledge and passion as a dedicated educator at Fuzhou Hu Bing Elementary School, further solidifying her reputation as a beloved teacher.
The early years in the United States were marked by challenges for Huizhen and her family. Undeterred, she took on various jobs, including housekeeping and seafood processing, to provide for her loved ones. In 1990, Huizhen's determination led her to become the proud owner and operator of the Golden Snack Bar, an employee canteen located at Macy's in downtown Sacramento. Her resilience and entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly as she managed the establishment until her retirement in 2002.
Even in retirement, Huizhen's passion for education remained unyielding. She earned Kindergarten Teacher Assistant Certificate and returned to the classroom, working as a Teacher's Assistant in a kindergarten for two years, where she continued to inspire young minds with her wealth of experience and genuine care. Additionally, she selflessly dedicated a substantial amount of her time and energy to helping raise her five cherished grandchildren, leaving an indelible imprint on their lives. Huizhen is most proud of her children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments.
In her golden years, Huizhen embraced the wonders of travel. She embarked on journeys to China, Asia, and Europe along with Laiyu, immersing themselves in diverse cultures and experiencing the world’s beauty. Furthermore, Huizhen discovered joy and fulfillment through her passion for ballroom dancing, allowing her spirit to shine brightly on the dance floor.
Huizhen is survived by her devoted husband, Laiyu Zou, and their three children: June Zou of Sacramento, Daniel Zou of Cupertino, and Ed Zou of Foster City. Additionally, she leaves behind five cherished grandchildren who brought immeasurable joy to her life.
A funeral service to honor and celebrate the life of Huizhen Zou will be held on Monday, July 10th, 2023, at 10 am at Skylawn Funeral Home.
Huizhen Zou's unbreakable spirit, unwavering dedication to education, and boundless love for her family will forever remain in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her. May she find eternal peace, and may her memory be a beacon of inspiration for generations to come.
Rest in eternal peace, dear Huizhen Zou. You will be profoundly missed and forever remembered.
