This obituary is administered by:
PATRYLUK, Irene MaryIt is with great sadness and remembrance that we announce the loss of our beloved mother Irene Mary Patryluk who passed away peacefully on Friday, August 18, 2017 at the age of 90. Irene was predeceased by her cherished husband William (Bill) Patryluk, her parents Oswald and Barbara Taylor (Vancouver), and her brother-in-law Alex Patryluk (Regina). Irene is survived by her children, Perry (Susan) Patryluk, Regina, SK; Marlene (Jim) Dorgan, Abbotsford, B.C.; and William Taylor Patryluk, Surrey, B.C.; grandchildren Carly, Scott (Danielle); Jamie (Lauren), Sara (Curtis), Jesse (Jie), and Anna (Luke); great-grandchildren Kayde, Bella, Felix, Maggie, Mason, Kristian, Ryker, Avery, Bodhi, and Avigail; and sister-in-law Olyne Patryluk (Tery, Bob, Marianne) and Tootsie.Irene was born on December 23, 1926 in Regina, Saskatchewan. She began her working career at the Birks jewelry store in Regina after graduating from Balfour Collegiate. In September 1947, she married William (Bill) Patryluk, her high school sweetheart and lived in the city for nearly the following four decades. Over the years, she had assumed a number of positions for the Government of Saskatchewan. Valuing the social interaction at work and the freedom and dignity it gave her, Irene maintained lifelong friendships and reveled in writing to and calling everyone who mattered to her.In 1985, Irene and Bill moved to South Surrey, B.C where they enjoyed many happy years in retirement, rekindling their love and life partnership. Irene is remembered as a kind and devoted mother and grandmother who had a wonderfully positive outlook on life. At all times generous, she constantly looked out for other people and all living things around her. She was very proud of her children and grandchildren and was forever delighted to see them. Attentive to her husband, family and friends either in a mentoring or supportive capacity, she brought joy to all and in many ways was the core of the family. Mom continually wore a smile and liked to laugh, confiding many times that Bill senior had brought her much happiness and always made her laugh (which is something dad did for most of us). We are pleased that they are reunited in GOD and the cosmos.Irene was an accomplished cook, incredible pie maker, dedicated animal/nature lover and avid gardener, a passion that was instilled by her Austrian mother Barbara. Mom was a meticulous housekeeper in spite of her youngest son's naughty efforts at making a continual mess. She loved to travel and over the course of her life made several trips to the USA, Europe, Mexico and China. Irene often talked about England and her dad whom she described as a true Englishman and not a "Uki Uki". She also reminisced about the close friends and relatives she had in the UK and back home in Saskatchewan. Mom lived to shop but would considerately insist on buying gifts for others. She was a regular volunteer for church activities and for the Peace Arch AuxiliaryMom treasured her time with dad, family and friends. She would frequently organize social events at home, making sure everyone enjoyed themselves. Irene is remembered by her many friends in various ways and they will the richer for it.In her final years, mom succumbed to Alzheimer's disease. For more than 10 years, Irene slowly lost the war against the terrible malady that crippled her social activity and caused her to become estranged by friends and family. However, even as her condition worsened, she was taken care of by loving people at home and she did her utmost to be dignified, putting on a jovial smile. In her final hours, she faithfully believed in the beauty of life, in GOD, in the goodness of heart and that actions spoke louder than words.A special thank-you to Monika, Marjorie, Vesna, Loleith, and Michelle for providing the best of care until her last breath. The darkness of death will never overshadow the light of life. However, our mother died at night in the Peace Arch Hospice alone neither attended by family nor visited by friends. In her final days/hours, Irene must have felt disappointed given her lifelong efforts to bring happiness and caring to others. Looking back, perhaps detracting from the advice of so-called experts and following one's heart may be preferable in times of crisis. May GOD forgive our sins and mom's enduring smile be a reminder that love and care for aging and ailing parents should take precedence regardless of our busy schedules and preoccupations. Filial Piety is a belief built upon true respect and requiring real action.A funeral service officiated by Pastor Peter Hanson is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on October 6, 2017 at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, 2350 – 148th St., Surrey, B.C. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Irene's life. A private viewing has also been arranged for October 5 at 2-4 at Valley View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Alzheimer Society of B.C. http:/ /www.alzheimer.ca/bc Gifts in memory, which can be found here: https://secure3.convio.net/asobc/site/ Donation2?df-id=1460&1460.donation=form1 Share condolences at www.irenepatryluk.com
