Irene Lorraine Hayter WilliamsAugust 16, 1917 - September 8, 2016Irene Lorraine Hayter Williams of Grand Junction, CO passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 8, 2016, at Bee Hive Homes in Grand Junction, CO.Irene was born on August 16, 1917, to Allen Amos and Eva Almyra Brown Hayter on the Hayter family farm in Grant Twp., Cass Co., IA. She was the second of three daughters. She attended country school through sixth grade. Irene and her sister, Aline, used to ride their horse, Dick, to school and then let him return home to the farm. One day Irene had the bright Idea to tie Dick up so she could ride him home after school. About an hour after school began her father, Allen, stormed up to the school to pick up the horse and Irene was in big trouble. Irene attended the last few years of grammar school in Anita, living in town with her aunt and uncle during the week because she could not attend Anita Elementary legally any other way. She also attended Anita High School and graduated at age 16 in 1934. Irene attended and graduated from Beauty College in Ames, IA after she and Larry were married.Irene married Lawrence Allan Williams of Atlantic, Iowa on July 7, 1937, in Maryville, MO. They celebrated 69 years of marriage prior to Larry's passing in 2006.Irene and Larry lived at the Hayter family farm and in Ames, IA until Larry left college. Terry was born on the farm in the same room in which Irene was born 21 years before. Irene practiced cosmetology in Atlantic, IA and they lived above the beauty shop. In 1940 the family moved to Omaha, NB, the birthplace of Judy. Larry was employed with the federal government so was not drafted until 1944. Irene, Terry and Judy moved to CA to be closer to Larry. They lived in Long Beach, Carmel-by-the-Sea and San Francisco until Larry was separated from the Navy in 1946. The family moved to Cheyenne, WY where Allan was born. In 1951 the family was transferred to Denver, CO and the birth of Cindy was accomplished. The family moved to Helena, MT in 1955 and then back to Denver in 1960. Larry's early retirement in 1972, was followed by a move to Grand Junction, CO. Later Irene and Larry lived in Apache Junction, AZ, Mesa, AZ, Cedaredge, CO, Palisade, CO and finally settled back in Grand Junction in 1981. Irene was caregiver to Larry for 54 years until his death from complications of Multiple Sclerosis.Irene played bridge for 75 years and especially enjoyed playing duplicate bridge. She sewed until she was in her 90's making clothing for herself, Larry, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved bargain shopping for clothing for her grandchildren. Irene was also a talented artist and needlewoman. Her joy was caring for her family. She and Larry spent many years camping and visiting family in their tent camper and motor home.Irene is survived by her sons, Terry (Anne) Williams of La Verkin, UT and Allan (Phyllis) Williams of Longmont, CO; daughters, Judy (Don) Schneider of Grand Junction and Cindy (Larry) Ribble of Kansas City, MO: grandchildren, Andy Schneider and Beth Fisher of Grand Junction; Mike (Anne Klein) Schneider of NY, NY; Jason (Kelly Fox) Williams of Wellington, CO; Kendra (Ben Spiger) Wilde of Helena, MT; Briana (Tom Martin) Powell of WI, and Abby Hebb of Marshal, WI; great-grandchildren, Lauren (Jason) Kusel, Kevin and Ethan Hill, Emma and Anatole Schneider, Christian and Anya Spiger, Lindsey, Sarah, and Charlie York, Rowan and Griffin Williams, J.T. Martin, Ashley Richards, Jasmine, Keenan, Gavin and Quintin Shepard, Kelsey Schwebs, and A.J. Hebb, and great-great-grandchild, August Kusel; nephew, Roger (Jo) Steele of Adair, IA; sister-in-law, Nina Phipps Williams of Delta, CO, and numerous other nieces and nephews. Irene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Larry; sisters, Faye Hayter and Aline Steele and husband Merritt; niece, Meredith Kaldenberg; granddaughter, Chantel Shepard; brother-in-law, Brice Williams and sister-in-law, Carolyn Vetter and husband Joe.A memorial service is planned for 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 19, 2016 at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 3888 27 ½ Road. Memorial contributions to Bee Hive Homes of Grand Junction, 2395 H Road, Grand Junction 81505 or HopeWest Hospice, 3090B N. 12th St., Grand Junction 81506. A family gathering is planned this summer for burial of Irene and Larry's ashes at Evergreen Cemetery in Anita, IA.
