Iris Marie MooneyNaples, FLIris Marie Mooney (Barber) died peacefully in her home on Thursday, February 2, 2017 in Naples, Florida. She was 91 years old. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Annamarie and Harlen Wampole of Middletown, MD; her son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Ana Mooney of Ijamsville, MD; her siblings, Marcelia Bracken of Sykesville, MD, and Harold and Dorothy Barber of Oceanview, DE; and her six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. She will also be missed by her dear friend, Steve Simak. She is preceded in death by her husband, George Roy Mooney, and son, George William Mooney. Ms. Mooney was born on September 17, 1925 in Baltimore, MD to her parents Wilmer and Mary Barber. She married her husband, George, in 1948 in Frederick, MD where they lived for 35 years. Iris was a remarkable woman who achieved many things in her life time. In her early 40's she began learning and teaching aerobic dance with the well-known Jackie Sorenson. At the age of 57 she competed in the 1982 Senior Olympics and was also one of the torch runners. Her passion for dance grew and eventually developed into a love for line dancing. She taught classes in Florida and Delaware for more than 30 years up until the age of 89. She also found time to compete in line dance competitions, and write her own choreography. Iris was named 1st runner up Ms. Florida Senior Citizen 2001 as well as being awarded the title Ms. Delaware in the Senior America 2001 pageant. After retiring from teaching, she continued to dance for fun at different events. Just this past year she showcased her choreographed, "I Love a Rainy Night" line dance, at both the Sunfest in Ocean City, MD, and the Ms. Senior America pageant in Atlantic City, NJ. Having lost her son, George, to cancer Iris was an advocate for Angel Flight - a non-profit organization dedicated to helping patients in need with free medical air transportation. She used line dancing as a way to raise funds for this organization over the years. The family has requested in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Angel Flight Mid-Atlantic (AFMA) in Iris' name at
