Gast, Irma H.Irma H. Gast, age 95, of Stevens Point, passed away while surrounded by family on September 15, 2017. Irma was born on April 14, 1922 in Chicago IL, and was adopted as an infant by her loving parents, the late Helena and Edwin Matthes. Irma moved to Watertown, WI as a child where she graduated from Northwestern Prep School for Boys. Irma later attended Concordia College in River Forest, IL to become a teacher. After relocating to Shawano, WI, where she taught school for two years, she met her husband Robert Gast. Irma and Robert married on August 20, 1944 and together they had five children. Irma was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed her family, traveling, and telling wonderful stories to her grandchildren. As a devout Christian, Irma was always willing to volunteer or lend a helping hand. With a servant's heart, she taught Sunday School for decades, volunteered with Special Olympics and worked with foreign exchange students visiting the USA. She inspired all those who had the fortune of meeting her. She is survived by her five children, James (Margaret) Gast of Plover, WI, Richard (Lynn) Gast of Mission Viejo, CA, Katherine (Keith) Gartland of Richfield, MN, Susan Gast of Port Washington, WI, and Pamela Gast-Hamilton of Los Angeles, CA; her grandchildren Jennifer (Kris)Madsen, Amanda (Chris)Hyzin, Rebecca (Matt) Ward, Alexandra and Austin Hamilton; and her great-grandson Caleb Hyzin. Irma was preceded in death by her loving parents and her husband. A service will be held in her memory, 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at St Paul Lutheran Church with Rev. Steve Hulke presiding. A time of visitation and sharing memories will precede the service from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church; and continued fellowship will follow the service. Interment will be held at a later date in Lutheran Cemetery in Watertown, WI. To help celebrate the life of Irma, her family sincerely requests all those who attend to wear the color red in her honor. The family would also like to thank the staff at Brookdale and Portage County Health Care Center for their wonderful care; and all those who gave support in Irma's final days.
