Ivan Delman ,"Dr. D," passed away peacefully on June 30, 2010. He was at his home in Grants Pass, Ore., with his loving wife Arlene and family.
He was born on Aug. 1, 1934 in Chicago, Ill., to his kind and loving parents, Phillip and Melva Delman. Ivan earned a bachelor's degree from Roosevelt University and also attended Cleveland Chiropractic College in Los Angeles. He graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1977.
He established a practice in Simi Valley that lasted over 20 years. Ivan always felt a need to give back to the community. His voluntarism and sense of community took many forms. He served as a Reserve Police Officer at the Burbank division. Ivan was a member and served as president in the Kiwanis Club and the Simi Sunrise Rotary Club. He was also a member of the International Foot Printers.
Ivan had a great love of cars. He collected and restored many vintage cars and was a member of many different car clubs. But as much as he enjoyed turning a wrench, his real passion came from racing. So, Ivan attended the Jim Hall Racing school, and went on to compete in Kart, Formula, and NASCAR events.
Ivan also loved music, especially country music. His band, the Dew Brothers, used down-home instruments such as the washtub bass, the washboard, and spoons. He also played traditional instruments like the bass guitar. The band performed at local fundraisers and retirement homes.
Retirement gave Ivan the time to pursue another of his great joys which was travel. Whether traveling by jet, car, or RV, his trips would always result in the addition of new friends and lasting relationships. And to keep in contact with everyone, he created an ongoing travel newsletter, "Three Degrees Off Bubble," in which he shared the joys and mishaps as they occurred. He showed you the world through his writings, and everyone that received it could not wait for the next edition.
This passion for writing led to Ivan authoring a booklet, and later a book. The second edition of his book is still in use.
Ivan is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Arlene; his son, Roger and wife Kathryn; his daughter, Donna and husband Dave; and his grandchildren, Kai and Wolfgang; his brother Owen and wife Betty, their children Jonathan, Lisa, her husband Shanti and his cousin Susan Weiss.
It has been said, "do not fear death... only the unlived life." Ivan left this life without fear.
Ivan was a resident of Simi Valley for many years and we will be holding a celebration of his life at the Grand Vista Hotel on July 24.
