J. Brian Foley, 73, of Scranton, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, Nov. 28. He was born on July 17, 1943, in Scranton, son of the late Thomas J. Foley Sr. and the late Mary A. McCann Foley. He was a graduate of Scranton Preparatory High School and then attended the University of Scranton. While attending the University of Scranton, he worked at Chamberlain Manufacturing. He obtained his J.D. by attending the night school program at the Catholic University's Columbus School of Law in Washington, D.C. While in law school, he worked for the IRS. In 1974, he returned with his family to his hometown of Scranton, where he practiced law for more than 40 years. He was an active member of the local and state bar associations. He was an active member of several community groups, including the Scranton Jaycees, the Green Ridge Little League, Green Ridge Biddy Basketball League and was a lifelong member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick. He was a member of the Country Club of Scranton, where he shared his love of golf with his son, Brian, and his grandson, Andrew. He especially loved hosting his family for big dinners at "the Club." He enjoyed traveling and spending time with his longtime love and companion, Heni Barren. They enjoyed time with their many friends and family. Together, they loved to entertain friends.His greatest joy was his grandchildren, who loved coming to visit at Gramps' house. He attended numerous soccer, football, field hockey and basketball games, band and dance recitals, as well as numerous religious and cultural events to support his beloved grandchildren. Most people will recall how he loved his many Labradors.He was survived by his loving companion of 30 years, Henrietta Barren; his children, Kathryn M. Foley, Scranton; M. Colleen (Foley) Canovas, McLean, Va.; M. Christine (Foley) Juba, Mechanicsburg, Pa.; Alicia E. Foley, Alexandria, Va.; Brian M. Foley, Throop; and his daughter-in-law, Karen (Senkow) Foley, Throop. He was also survived by his grandchildren, Andrew Juba, Meaghan Juba, Grace Juba, Anna Juba, Isabella Canovas, Matthew Canovas, Nicholas Canovas, Jack Foley and Sofia Foley. Also surviving are three brothers and one sister, Thomas J. Foley Jr., Dunmore; R. John Foley, Throop; J. Peter Foley, Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; and Marianne (Foley) Higgins, Shawnee-on-Delaware, Pa. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Madison Rose Juba; a sister, Catherine Foley; and his brother-in-law, C. Daniel Higgins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in St. Clare's Church, 2301 N. Washington Ave., Scranton, by Monsignor Joseph G. Quinn. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Family and friends are invited to call Friday, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Nicholas Chomko Funeral Home, 1132 Prospect Avenue, South Scranton. Those attending the funeral are asked to go directly to church Saturday morning.
