Jack Bassett Obituary

Jan 01, 2016 - Oct 31, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
Jack Bassett, 86, was a lifelong resident of Cache Valley. He passed away peacefully in his sleep at Cache Valley Assisted Living on Monday morning Dec. 27, 2010. He had been a resident there since June of 2006. He was born on Jan. 17, 1924, to Royal Clarence Bassett and Jennie Belle Wayman Bassett at the train station in Wellsville, Utah. Jack grew up in Wellsville and Logan. He quit high school so he could work full time to support his Mother and brother Calvin. When WWII started he joined the Army and was stationed in Europe until the War ended. When he came home he remained in the Army Reserve for about 17 years. Not long after returning from the war Jack married his sweetheart Elaine Smith on Sept. 12,1945, in the Logan LDS Temple. Jack and Elaine were blessed with three boys, Brent (Joy) of Wellsville, Burt of Hyrum, Doug (Heidi) of North Ogden. They had 16 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Jack loved people and was loved by all those who knew him. He loved being outdoors; his favorite times were spent with his family in Blacksmith Fork Canyon. He and Elaine spent many days at their trailer together and with family and friends. In their younger days they spent a lot of time together fishing and then shared that experience with their kids and grandkids. Jack looked forward to each fall so he could go hunting with his boys and the grand kids. He also loved to garden and spent many summer and fall days working to make sure there were no weeds and that everything was growing the way it should. Then he loved to share those wonderful vegetables with family, friends and neighbors. He always worked hard to support his family his whole life. He had many jobs in his life, many times having more than one job. He worked as a paperboy selling papers on the street corner as a youth. He worked at the Highway Market, as a roofer, mink skinner, worked at Del Monte, Cache Meadow Dairy and Western General Dairies. Jack will be remembered by many as the Milkman at local restaurants and grocery stores. He was always ready with chocolate milk for the kids and ice cream for birthdays. Jack was an active member of the LDS Church and held several different positions Elders Quorum president, member of the bishoprics in the Logan IH Ward and at one of the university wards in Logan. Jack was preceded in death by his wife Elaine, his parents, one sister, Sarah Muzzenta Joy, and five brothers, Royal Clarence Jr., Warren Pierpont, Edward Wellington, Dee Wayman and George Calvin Bassett. He was also preceded in death by one great-grandson, Andrew Brady Bassett. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 29, at Allen-Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center Street. A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services at the mortuary. Interment will be in the Logan City Cemetery. Condolences and thoughts may be expressed to the family online at www.allenmortuaries.net.The family would like to thank all those at Cache Valley Assisted Living who have worked with Jack and helped him for the past four and a half years.
