Jack Edward Turman passed away on October 30, 2016. Jack was born on March 20, 1928, in Duck, West Virginia, to Paul and Nola Turman. Jack was one of eight children raised in Huntington, West Virginia, and is survived by his sister Jean Tabor. Jack went to the Kentucky Military Institute for High School. Following graduation, he attended Marshall Junior College and then served four years in the Navy. Jack married his high school sweetheart, Norma L. Houchin, on May 8, 1947. Their attempt to elope was intercepted by both of their fathers! After completing his Navy service, Jack attended the University of Kentucky, where he graduated in 1952 with highest honors and Phi Beta Kappa with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering. Following graduation, Jack and Norma moved to Bakersfield, CA. Jack worked for Rickett and Reaves Engineering. He designed what is now Westchester and College Heights in conjunction with Ralph Smith. He also helped build Bakersfield College and Memorial Hospital. In 1962 he joined Rexroth Construction Company. In 1964 Jack and Norma successfully created Turman Construction Company. The company is responsible for grading numerous roads and foundations for commercial and residential properties throughout central and southern California. Some of his biggest jobs were the 12-story tower, Valley Plaza, and many subdivisions for Castle and Cooke, Inc. He retired from Turman Construction in 1996, and his son, Jeff Turman, took over the family business. After retiring, he started Normal Development Corporation. It was in this time of life that he impacted many lives with his generosity and wisdom. Jack loved enjoying the great outdoors with family and friends, fishing and hunting in Alaska, Channel Islands, and Mexico. His most enjoyable moments in the outdoors occurred on his trips to Kern Flat. Whether by Tote Gote or horseback, those times on the river with family and friends were forever close to his heart.Jack and Norma have two children, Jeff S. Turman and Dr. Jack E. Turman, Jr. Jack is survived by his wife, Norma L. Houchin-Turman; his son, Jeff S. Turman and daughter-in-law JoAnne Turman, and Dr. Jack E. Turman, Jr. and daughter-in-law Janet Miyashiro-Turman. He is survived by five grandchildren: Michael E. Turman, Kara and husband Scott Reynolds, Megan and husband Ronnie Machado, Jack E. Turman, III, and James M. Turman. He is also survived by eight great-grandchildren: Reese Turman, Braden Turman, Kyleigh, Bodin, and Kennedy Anne Reynolds, Ronnie, Cannon, and Evan Machado.The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in memory of Jack to the Houchin Blood Bank.
