Jack M. GarnerMcCameyJack M. Garner, age 88, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2017, in McCamey. He was born on Nov. 14, 1928, in Rankin, Texas, to J.W. and Mamie Garner. Jack was the youngest of eight children.Jack grew up on his father's ranches. He started working on the ranch at the age of three. He was a devoted Rankin Red Devil. Jack was a great athlete who excelled in football and basketball. Jack met the love of his life, Peggy Sue Dossey, when he was still in high school. They were married on Feb. 17, 1947.Jack worked for Gulf Oil/Chevron Oil from the time he was 18 years old until he retired. He was a rancher, a racehorse owner and an avid supporter and adult leader for 4-H. He served on the McCamey ISD School Board and was a member of the United Methodist Church.Jack is survived by his wife Peggy, and three children, John H. "Rusty" Garner (Carla), Katie Bolen (Leland) and Susijac Settle (Larry). He is survived by nine grandchildren, Craig Hopper (Jennifer), Clay Garner (Robin, Kesha
Smith (Dustin), Rowdy Bolen (Tameisha), Chancy Allen (Ty), Cherokee Strube (Cody), Golden Bolen, Chase Settle (Bobbi) and Quisto Settle. Jack has 15 great-grandchildren. He's also survived by two nieces and numerous great-nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by parents, John W. and Mamie Garner; and seven siblings, Velma McLaughlin, J.D. Garner, Nora Brown, Dolly Rankin, June Garner, Hattie Mitchell and Bud Garner.The family will be receiving friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, 2017, at Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home in McCamey. Funeral sevice is at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 21, 2017, at First United Methodist Church in McCamey. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Shaffer-Nichols Funeral Home.
