FREMONT — Jack Woodard Rice, age 90, of Lake George, Fremont, Indiana, passed away Tuesday, October 21, 2014, at the Lakeland Nursing Center, Angola, Indiana. Jack was born on August 19, 1924, in Cook County, Illinois, to Bert W. and Myrtle M. (Burgeson) Rice. He married Carolyn (McDowell) and she preceded him in death in 1993. He then married Joyce (Hollowell) Miller on November 26, 1994, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Jack retired in 1987 after 36 years of service with the Dana Corporation Spicer Axel Division, Fort Wayne, Indiana, as Facilities Engineer. He was a graduate of Elkhart High School class of 1942 and Purdue University class of 1949. He was an Army WW II veteran serving from October 20, 1942 until December 8, 1945, receiving his honorable discharge and held the rank of Corporal. He was deployed to active duty and Europe in 1943. He was assigned to the 550th Anti-Aircraft Artillary Battalion Headquarters Battery. He served in France, Germany, Poland, Belgium and England. He received five battle stars including the Battle of the Bulge, Invasion of Europe, Omaha Beach, and Battle of Central Europe, and the Battle of Normandy. He was a member of the former Home Lodge No. 342 F & AM and Summit City Lodge No. 170 F & AM, Fort Wayne, Indiana, Mizpah Shrine of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Scottish Rite Valley of Fort Wayne, Indiana, The Jesters, and Elkhart York Rite Chapter 101. Survivors include his wife, Joyce Rice of Lake George, Fremont, Indiana; two grandchildren, Ryan Sawchuk of Orlando, Florida, and Rachel Sawchuk of Miami, Ohio; a son-in-law, Dr. Alan Sawchuk of Indianapolis, Indiana; two stepdaughters; and seven step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Janet Marie Sawchuk; and a brother, Robert Rice. Calling hours will be from 1-2 p.m. Saturday, October 25, 2014, at Beams Funeral Home, Fremont, Indiana. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday October 25, 2014, at Beams Funeral Home, with Pastor Darin Hendrey officiating. Burial will be at Covington Memorial Gardens in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
