Jack Paul SmithSalisbury-Jack Paul Smith, 89, of Salisbury, Maryland and formerly of Ft. Myers Beach, Florida passed away on Sunday, April 30, 2017. Jack was born on October 8, 1927 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was the son of the late Evelyn Sullivan Smith and Joseph Smith. Jack attended schools in the Philadelphia area before graduating from Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland in 1952. After graduation, Jack began his sales career with Pittsburgh Paint & Glass (PP&G) and moved to Salisbury, Maryland where he met his future wife, Anne Reed Smith, when Jack enrolled in an adult typing class being taught by Anne at Wicomico High School.Jack was a sports enthusiast having umpired and coached many years in the Salisbury Little League and was probably best known, and almost always recognized, as a long-time high school men and women's basketball referee throughout the Maryland, Delaware and Virginia area. He was a founder of the Salisbury Lions Club Holiday Basketball Classic that continues annually in Salisbury. Jack was a Past President of the Salisbury Jaycees and the Salisbury Lions Club (1973-1974). Jack was the recipient of numerous awards with the Lions Club including the Lion of the Year (1990-1991), Outstanding Service Award (1992-1993, 1993-1994), and the President's Appreciation Award (1996-1997). In addition, Jack received an award in 1974 for his many years of dedication and service to the Youth of the St. Francis De Sales Parish. Upon moving to Florida, Jack's volunteer work continued with the Bonita Springs elementary School where he was awarded the Outstanding Volunteer award in 2005. Jack was also a member of the Lions Club while residing in Florida.After retiring from PP&G, Jack and Anne traveled extensively including several trips to The Championships, Wimbledon in London, England, The French Open in Paris, France and thirty plus years of consecutive attendance at the US Open Tennis Championships in Flushing Meadows, New York. Jack played in the Lee County, Florida Men's 70+ Doubles Tennis League where he was a finalist in the 2001 tournament. Jack was a player-coach for a 3.5 USTA Tennis team in Florida that qualified for the National Championships in Arizona. Jack was a member of the Vines Golf Community as well as the Estero Country Club where he sank a 115 yard hole in one on November 4, 2013 at the age of 86.Jack was an Army Veteran and was a former member of the St. Francis De Sales Church in Salisbury, Maryland, Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Delmar, Maryland and St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Bonita Springs, Florida.In addition to his parents, Jack was predeceased by his only child, Paul Jack Smith in 1980 and his sisters, Evelyn and Josephine Smith. He is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years, Anne Reed Smith and numerous close friends. Although Jack could never remember a person's name, he always remembered their occupation. Jack never met a stranger and could rarely walk down a street or into a restaurant without someone recognizing or remembering him.A visitation will be held Thursday evening, May 4, 2017 at Holloway Funeral Home on Snow Hill Road in Salisbury, Maryland from 6:00-8:00 p.m. with prayers at 7:30 p.m. A Catholic Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, May 5, 2017 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church on Bi-State Boulevard in Delmar, Maryland followed by interment at Parsons Cemetery on North Division Street, Salisbury, Maryland.In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Jack can be made to St. Francis De Sales Parish, Salisbury, Maryland, St Leo the Great Catholic Church, Bonita Springs, Florida, Washington College, Chestertown, Maryland or a .
