James Alexander "Jim" Douglass1936 - 2017James Alexander ("Jim") Douglass of Gulf Breeze passed away early Friday, February 10, 2017, surrounded by his family. Jim was born on December 1, 1936 in Birmingham, Alabama to Vernon James and Frances Kate Floyd Douglass, and had resided in Gulf Breeze since 1965. Jim was a mechanical engineering graduate of Auburn University and a member of Theta Chi Fraternity. He worked for many years at American Cyanamid in Pace, Florida.Jim was an amazing engineer; he was an engineer born, not made. He could fix anything, from cars to boats. He even hand-built boats in his carport in Gulf Breeze. Jim also loved to fish, both deep-sea and inshore. But Jim's talents didn't stop there -- he was a talented singer, and lent his voice to the choir at his church, Gulf Breeze United Methodist, for many years. Jim was predeceased by his parents and by his sister, Dr. Kathryn Douglass of Birmingham, Alabama. Jim is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nancy Johnson Douglass of Gulf Breeze; his daughter, Victoria "Vicky" Douglass Sullivan (Robert) of Vestavia Hills, Alabama, and Arlington, Virginia; and his sons, Col. Charles A. "Chuck" Douglass, U.S. Air Force (Ret.) (Annette) of Pike Road, Alabama; and James Robert "Rob" Douglass (Leisa) of Pensacola Beach, Florida and Birmingham, Alabama. He is also survived by seven grandsons, Patrick Sullivan of San Francisco, California; Alex Sullivan and Andy Sullivan of Vestavia Hills, Alabama; and Tommy Garvey, and Ethan, Max, and Will Douglass of Pensacola Beach, Florida. He was much beloved by family, pets (Annabelle and Kitty), and friends.A celebration of Jim's life will be Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church, followed by a reception at the church. Private burial will follow at Bayview Memorial Park, Pensacola, Florida. Memorials may be sent to the Pensacola Humane Society, 5 North Q Street, Pensacola, Florida 32505.
