James graduated from West Jefferson High School in Harvey, Louisiana in 1960, where he met Jacquelyn Ann Laborie, his high school sweetheart. They were married in 1961 in Tyler, Texas, where James began his career in hair then moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to open his own salon. They left Oklahoma City when James was drafted into the US Army to serve as a medic in Korea. While in Korea, James volunteered at an orphanage, having Jackie send items to give to the children. Several years later, they moved to Nacogdoches to begin their life and family "with roots." James was nationally and internationally recognized in the hair fashion profession as an accomplished teacher and demonstrator. He lectured throughout the United States and Europe. James was a well-respected member of Texas Lone Star Styles Committee, Hair America, and Haute Coiffure Francaise in Paris, France. James was an active member of the Nacogdoches Breakfast Lions Club and held many offices. He was particularly passionate about the Lions Club Camp for Diabetic Children and Lions Club Eye Bank of Texas. James was an avid reader, loved sharing knowledge and Texas history. He enjoyed fishing, NASCAR, hunting with friends of the 1600 Hunt Club, spending time with friends, and he especially loved his family and very proud of them.
