James Duane Barker Jr. July 8, 1946 – April 2, 2015James Duane Barker Jr. died at his home on April 2, 2015. Jim was 68. He was born on July 8, 1946, in Miami, Florida, to James Duane Barker and Sondra Marie Colman.At a young age Jim worked at his grandparents' court reporting office typing transcripts, where he learned to value the importance of grammar and punctuation. Throughout his life he has been actively involved in the court reporting community. He started his own business and developed SearchMaster, a software program now used by thousands of court reporters to quickly find the information they need. Jim also hosted multiple online forums where he would answer questions about grammar and punctuation. He encouraged a high standard of professionalism and was well known and admired for his personal approach and the generous amounts of time he would spend helping others.In 1999 at a court reporters conference, Jim met his wife, Lynda, and soon chased her all the way to Juneau, Alaska. They were married on October 19, 2003. Jim cherished his time with Lynda and often told her that their days together were the happiest days of his life. Above all, Jim's passion was his love for God. He was a man of prayer who rejoiced every day in the grace of God. He was actively involved at Christ Lutheran Church where he served on the church council, and he was known for greeting people at the door with an energetic smile and a handshake. As a brother in faith, he was always looking for ways to encourage others and lead them to the cross of Christ and God's unconditional love and forgiveness. We rejoice and take comfort in the promise of the resurrection and the eternal life which Jim has now inherited.Jim is survived by his wife, Lynda Barker; his children, Dawnmarie Barker, Liza Michelle Sante Held, and James M. Barker; Lynda's son Christopher Batchelor; his grandsons Julian Piantedosi, Landon Furrer, and Gabriel Furrer; his brothers Dale Barker, Carl Barker, and Alex Barker; and his cousins Jennie Barker and Steve Barker. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Christ Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 34104, Juneau, Alaska 99803, or may be made online on the church's website at www.ChristJuneau.com.The Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 pm on April 25th at Christ Lutheran Church, located at 10300 Glacier Highway, Juneau, Alaska. The service will also be streamed live online from the church's website. Following the service there will be refreshments in the church fellowship hall.
