Mr. James Edward Myles, Jr. died unexpectedly in Los Angeles, California on November 4, 2019, at the age of 65.

James is survived by his son Jamaal, stepson Marcus; and grandchildren Patrick, Alexander, Matthew, and Chrysta. He is preceded in death by his sister, Eva, and daughter, Lakeysha.

James was born on October 21, 1954, in Vacherie, Louisiana to the late James Myles Sr. and Hazel Blue. He graduated from Devry University in 2005 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. In 1973, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He served his country with courage and honor for two years and was honorably discharged in 1975. During his years of service, he traveled to Thailand fueling B 52 bombers during the Vietnam War. After his time in the military, James, Jr. moved to Los Angeles, California and dedicated over 30 years of service to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs as an Administrative Officer.

He married Cerina Tolbert, his wife of over 20 years. His children remember him as a kind, gentle and patient father who encouraged them to pursue their goals.

James was accomplished at helping injured veterans receive proper healthcare and often mentored his co-workers to reach their full potential. He was a generous and dedicated individual who loved learning and who was passionate about pursuing higher education. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who knew him.

I work at the VA as a physical therapist. I would see James daily at the end of the workday for the last few years and we would always say goodbye and/or have a nice weekend. Sometimes we would stop and chat for a little bit. He would always ask me what I was doing professionally as I received my doctorate in physical therapy while at the VA. He was very supportive and then asked me "what's next?" I would usually shrug but it was nice to have someone continually pushing me to do better. I could tell he was genuinely interested in my future and encouraged me to keep striving for bigger and better things. He always greeted me with his warm smile, which will be greatly missed. Although I am more of a work acquaintance, his presence will have a lasting impact on me. I am happy I was able to share laughs and smiles which such a special and amazing person!
