James "Jimmy" Nichols, 70, of Jeffersonville, Indiana, passed away in the early morning of January 23 at Baptist Health Floyd. Funeral services for Jim will be held at 11 AM on Friday, January 27, 2017 at Legacy Funeral Center, 921 Main Street in Jeffersonville, with cremation to follow. Visitation will be held on Thursday, from 5-8 PM and after 9 AM on Friday at the funeral home. Jim was born on July 16, 1946 to John and Esther (Barker) Nichols in Huntington, West Virginia. At 17, Jim began working as a newspaper pressman at the Herald Dispatch in Huntington. He would then go on to work at both the Columbus Dispatch and the Tampa Tribune. On his last day at the Tribune, the presses were shut down for the first time in the newspaper's history for his going away party. After moving his family to Indiana in 1987, he worked for the Courier-Journal for the remainder of his career. He was a kind and generous man, who could strike up a conversation with anyone and was famous for his peanut butter fudge. He loved his zero-turn mower, Gunsmoke, and the Eagles, but above all, he adored his grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, and four siblings, Danny Nichols, Janie Nichols, Terry Nichols, and Teresa Bostwick. He is survived by Carlotta, his wife of 39 years; his four children, Craig Young, Danny (Janet) Nichols, Amy (Matt) Adams, and Kayla (Brandon) Saylor; and his five grandchildren, Dakota, 12, Noah, 9, Lucy, 7, Vivienne, 4, and Remington, 3. The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the ICU nurses of Baptist Health Floyd. To leave a special message for the family, please visit
