It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Lee Williams, a beloved father, grandfather, husband, uncle, and friend. James peacefully passed away on December 2, 2024, at the age of 71, surrounded by his children and wife. After his passing, James was transported back to Virginia to be mourned and celebrated by the remainder of his family.
James was born on November 22, 1932, in Newport News, Virginia, to Arlena and John Williams. He is survived by his devoted wife of 50 years, Mary Williams; his two children, David Williams (Lisa) and Sarah Paul (John); and a host of brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was the middle child of eight siblings, though he often jokingly claimed to be the oldest.
After high school, James proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he earned commendations for his dedication and courage. Following his military service, James moved to North Carolina, drawn to the area's natural beauty and his lifelong passion for fishing and hunting. He found great joy in raising his family on the country back roads of North Carolina.
James enjoyed a long and successful career in engineering, where he worked for more than 30 years. His meticulous work ethic and willingness to help others made him a trusted and respected colleague, earning him the nickname "the man who could build anything." He played an integral role in numerous construction projects throughout the Carolinas.
Outside of work, James was an avid outdoorsman. He spent countless weekends hiking, fishing, and camping with his family in the Rockies, passing on his love of nature to his children and grandchildren. He was also an active member of his local church, where he served as a deacon and a mentor to younger members of the congregation.
James will be remembered for his generosity, his dedication to family, and his unwavering faith. His spirit lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, Newport News, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to plant flowers or a memorial tree in James' honor, as he was always known for making his community beautiful for others to enjoy.
May his memory be a blessing.
