James William (Bill) NimmoNaples, FLBill was born on April 10, 1924 in Norfolk, Virginia to John P. and Nietza E. Nimmo. He is survived by his wife, Susan Gentry Nimmo of Naples, Florida, daughter Cheryl Watson (husband Travis) of Timberville, Virginia and grandson Zack Watson (wife Liz) of Mt. Jackson, Virginia. He was predeceased by wife Mary Virginia (Ginny) Nimmo who died in 2001. As a 17 year old lifeguard, he decided to enlist early in 1942 in the Army Air Corps, later the US Air Force, where he became a flight instructor during
World War II. During the
Korean War, he served as a fighter pilot where he received honors for completing 100 missions and was given the Distinguished Flying Cross. His passion for flying did not end there. He continued to teach flying to students for the majority of his life. After a distinguished career with the Federal Aviation Administration, he retired from public service and moved to Bryce Resort, Basye, Virginia in 1983 with Ginny. Always an avid athlete, he became certified in ski instruction and taught at the Bryce Mountain Ski School until he was 86 years old. In 2010, he and his wife Susan decided to relocate to Naples, Florida to pursue the sunshine and a milder climate where they enjoyed tennis, biking and watching sports. A private memorial service will be held in October at Verona Walk, Naples. A second service will be held in December at Bryce Mountain, Virginia.
