Jamie Slattery Obituary

Jun 22, 1954 - Oct 28, 2016

This obituary is administered by:
Jamie Anne Slattery, age 62, passed away on October 28, 2016 at her home in Lutherville, MD surrounded by her loving family. She was born on June 22, 1954 in Glen Ridge, NJ to James and Lois Slattery. Jamie grew up in Fairfield, NJ, and attended a public school for disabled children in Newark, and The Matheny School in Peapack, NJ. At the age of 17, she transferred to The Crippled Children's School in Jamestown, ND, where she graduated with a high school diploma in 1978. After high school, Jamie completed an independent living program at Courage Center in Golden Valley, MN in 1980. She then went on to complete her associate degree at Minnesota Community College. Jamie lived in Minneapolis for 35 years where she was an active member of the Evergreen and Urban Refuge Churches and had a large community of dear friends. Jamie moved to Maryland in 2013 to be near her family and attended Grace Fellowship Church in Lutherville. Jamie never let her disability prevent her from doing anything she wanted. Jamie was a member of a wheelchair square dancing group - the Perfect Squares; she tried downhill skiing, went on cruises and traveled the world. She never passed up an opportunity to spend time with her nieces and nephews whom she called "her kids." Jamie dedicated her life to helping others. She taught needlepoint in an adult care program, taught Sunday school, did clerical work at Courage Center, volunteered for a reading program in the public schools and served as a tireless advocate for the disabled. In 1995 Jamie was awarded the Virginia McKnight Binger Award in Human Services as an "unsung hero." Jamie is survived by her mother Lois Slattery, Lutherville MD; her siblings Lois (Frank) Spender, Hackettstown, NJ and Edward (Kornelia Tolnai) Slattery, Lutherville MD; her nieces and nephews Frank (Rebecca) Spender, Kristel Kirk, Chris (Andrea) Slattery, Kelli (Michael) McClelland, Peter Slattery, and Matthew Slattery; and seven grand-nieces and -nephews. Jamie was preceded in death by her niece Jennifer Spender, her father James Slattery, and her sister-in-law Susan Palmer Slattery. A memorial service will be held at Grace Fellowship Church 9505 Deereco Rd Lutherville MD at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 5, 2016. The family will be greeting friends and relatives immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to FANN, Inc. at P.O. Box 6352 Lutherville-Timonium, MD 21094 ( https://www.crowdrise.com/fanninc), or to The Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at https://secure.jhu.edu/form/kimmel and designate the donation to Dr. Evan Lipson's Melanoma research.
