FREMONT — Fremont resident Janet M. Hankes, 80, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 28, 2014. She was born on May 9, 1934, in Fremont to Wade and Mildred (Penner) Foster. Janet was a 1952 graduate of Fremont High School. Janet was a member of the Fremont United Methodist Church, Fremont Historical Society and the Fremont Cemetery Board. She had been a member of the church choir and the Sweet Adelines for many years. Janet married Warren (Bud) Hankes on November 8, 1953, at the Fremont United Methodist Church. After high school graduation Janet worked for several years in Fort Wayne for the Lincoln National Life Insurance Company, and lived at the YWCA. Bud and Janet also owned Eckman's Shoe Store in Fremont for many years. Later she worked in the cafeteria of the Fremont School system for many years, and then she also worked as a toll attendant on the Indiana Toll Road. She and Bud each had motorcycles and spent years riding with friends and their sons. Her husband, Bud, preceded her in death in 2005. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Mark in 1999 and Steve in 1982. She was also preceded in death by a brother, David Foster in 1997; her mother Mildred Foster in 1996; and her father Wade Foster in 2001. She is survived by a brother, Jerry Foster (Wilma) of Fremont; a daughter-in-law, Carol (Sattison) Hankes of Fremont; a sister-in-law, Juineta (Hankes) Braman of Angola; and a brother-in-law, Charles (Ilah Hankes) Champion of Florida. Also she is survived by several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. A celebration of life service will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, January 5, 2015, at Beams Funeral Home in Fremont, Indiana, with Rev. Darin Hendrey officiating. There will be calling hours from 3-5 p.m. Monday prior to the services at Beams Funeral Home. Burial will be at a later date at Fremont Cemetery, Fremont, Indiana Memorials are to Fremont United Methodist Church, Fremont Cemetery, or Cameron Hospice.
