KINSTON | Mrs. Janice Sumrell Norris, 80, passed away on December 15, 2015, at Lenoir Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her family. Janice was born on October 16, 1935, in Greene County, North Carolina. She was happily married to Jimmy Edwin Norris for 50 years before his passing. Janice was also preceded in death by her parents, Allen Clinton Sumrell and Lillian Frazier Sumrell, and her sister, Margaret Sumrell Craft. She is survived by her brother, Lieutenant Colonel and Mrs. Joe C. Sumrell; daughter Jill Norris Croom and husband, William Clay Croom III; daughter Christi Norris Fillippeli and husband David Jarvis Fillippeli, Jr.; and four grandchildren, Brittany Michelle Croom, Ashley Fillippeli Stucker and husband John Lee Stucker, III, William "C.C." Clay Croom, IV, and Bethany Alicia Fillippeli. Janice retired from DuPont after 38 years of service. She actively served as a Chief Judge with the Lenoir County Board of Elections. She was also an active member of Spilman Memorial Baptist Church. She loved to travel, enjoyed her card groups, was a sports enthusiast, and never missed a NASCAR race on Sunday. She enjoyed every opportunity to spend time with her family, attending and cheering on her grandchildren at all of their sporting events, dance recitals, competitions, graduations, and birthdays. She was adored by her daughters and grandchildren and affectionately called "Meme" by her loving family. A celebration of life will be held for Janice on December 17, 2015, at 4 p.m. at Spilman Memorial Baptist Church, with a visitation to follow in the church fellowship hall. Interment will be at 11 a.m. Friday, December 18, 2015, at Pinelawn Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors at the Norris home.
