Jean Abbott ShoultzAbilene, TXJean Abbott Shoultz, 89, a longtime prominent member of the Abilene community, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2015. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Friday, August 7, 2015 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Burial will follow in the Seaton Cemetery in Callahan County. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday at the funeral home.Jean was born on February 1, 1926, in Kerens Texas. She graduated from high school in Eustace Texas. At age 16, she entered nursing school. After nursing school, she worked at the old Parkland Hospital in Dallas Texas. While at work one day, she met the love of her life, Vardeman Hudson Shoultz. Vardeman and Jean were married on June 15, 1945, in Dallas Texas. In the early 1950's, Vardeman and Jean moved out west. They made their home in Abilene where they both resided until they were called home. Jean loved her family and friends very much. She was active in many charities and organizations including the Abilene Women's Club, Hendrick Medical Center Ladies' Auxiliary, American Red Cross, the Junior League of Abilene and numerous church groups with Ladies Bible Fellowship being one of her favorites. She received many accolades and certificates; including a Certificate of Honor from MENSA which she received in October of 1990 for twenty-five continuous years of membership and a Certificate of Appreciation from the Abilene Association for Mental Health in recognition for her distinguished service as a member of the Board of Directors (1966-1968). Jean was an avid artist and many homes across the state have her paintings hanging on their walls. She loved art so much that she enrolled at McMurry College receiving her Bachelor of Art degree in 1981. Jean and Vardeman were an integral part of the medical community of Abilene for many years. Vardeman had his pilots' license and with Jean by his side would fly to numerous rural hospitals in the Big Country treating patients for their radiological needs. They also treated patients locally and in 1952, they started a School for Radiology Technologists at Hendrick Medical Center. The school continues to educate those interested in working as a Radiology Tech today. Jean and Vardeman never hesitated to help those in need. They were supporters of many local charities, local museums, the Abilene Philharmonic, local art projects and numerous other organizations. Jean and Vardeman loved to travel. It was common for them to spend many a weekend or week at their Possum Kingdom lake house or be out at the ranch checking on cattle and spending time at their house in the country. They also traveled out of Texas and out of the country many times. Jean is survived by her sons, William Hudson Shoultz and Vardeman "Bart" Wayne Shoultz-wife Monica, daughters Gretchen Shoultz-partner Patty Belcher and Annchen Lawrence-husband Kim; grandchildren, Tonya Williams, Matthew Lawrence-wife Lindsey, Susanna Osterman-husband Shane, and Jackson Shoultz; numerous great grandchildren, nieces, Margie Hoops, SueAnn Shoultz Kuhns, JoEllen Shoultz Small, Cathy Shoultz and nephew, James Shoultz. Close family friend and bookkeeper-Rosemary King and her beloved faithful care givers, Maria Berry-with the family for 8 years, Carol Peloquin and Donna Leonard.Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Vardeman Hudson Shoultz, two brothers in law, one sister in law, three sisters and one brother. Jean will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege to know her! Jean was a Christian, wife, mom, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, nurse, volunteer, a gourmet cook, lover of great art, a fervent reader, an outdoorswoman, loved music and singing, and so on but to all, she was Mama Jean! Until we meet again....
