Jean Murphy WestlandApril 22, 1927 - Nov. 4, 2016NOTRE DAME - Jean Murphy Westland, the first resident at Andre Place at Holy Cross Village, passed peacefully on Friday, November 4, 2016. She was born on April 22, 1927, in Oak Park, IL, to the late Harry and Irene Murphy. She is survived by her loving daughter, Julia Westland of Nashville, Tennessee. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, her children, Tom, Suzanne and Mary, and her brother, Thomas Murphy. Jean attended St. Luke Parish School, Trinity High School in River Forest and St Mary's College where she obtained her degree in history. She also attended the University of Fribourg in Switzerland. Jean was an avid traveler. Her adventures included traveling with nuns on the Queen Mary to France, Ireland, Italy and England. She also spent time in Switzerland attending the University of Fribourg. She worked in the china department at Marshall Fields, then joined The Red Cross and served in Morocco. Upon her return she moved to California where she met and married the love of her life, Ken Westland. They moved back East and eventually settled in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Later they moved to Colorado. Jean returned to Notre Dame upon Ken's death ten years ago. Jean was known for her Intelligence and witty personality. She was loved by all who knew her and will be sorely missed. A Mass will be celebrated at 11 am Wednesday, November 9, 2016, at the St. Joseph Chapel, 54515 State Hwy 933 North, Notre Dame, where friends may visit for one hour prior to the Mass.
