Jean Norris MurphyJean Norris Murphy passed away at home on Sunday, February 19, 2017, at the age of 94. Visitation will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 25, in the Chapel at The Oaks of Louisiana, and a memorial service celebrating the life of Mrs. Murphy will begin at 3:00 p.m. Officiating will be Reverend Dr. Carl Rhoads of First United Methodist Church Shreveport.Jean was born on March 21, 1922 in Elizabeth, New Jersey to Elmer Looker and Florence Leonard Norris. She was raised in Elizabeth and Summit, New Jersey. Jean attended the University of Vermont, a time in her life that gave her many wonderful and lasting memories. She graduated in 1943 with a degree in chemistry and then worked for Bell Laboratories in New Jersey and a chemical company in New York City. Jean met Neil Murphy in Rockefeller Center, and they married on April 16, 1952. The couple lived in New Jersey and welcomed twins, Neil Jr. and Jean Anne, in 1955 and Kevin in 1958. The family moved to Shreveport with Western Electric in 1965. In 1969, Jean went to work for Western Electric, where she met her very special group of friends, who affectionately called themselves, "the Lunch Bunch," and who remained very close for many years after Jean's retirement from Western in 1985.Jean enjoyed cross stitching beautiful family treasures, the flowers in her backyard and feeding the hummingbirds, and she was always faithful to her strict, daily diet of mint chocolate chip ice cream and Monjuni's mint tea. She was a proud mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and with all her heart, Jean loved her three children and six grandchildren, and she was especially smitten with her great-grandson, Mason. She will be remembered fondly for always acknowledging every birthday and special occasion, her strength of spirit and her clear blue eyes.Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Neil Donald Murphy; her brother, Leonard Ellsworth Norris; her son, Kevin Patrick Murphy; and her cousin, Elinor "Rusty" Zimmerman. She is survived by her son, Neil Donald Murphy, Jr., and his wife, Deanna, of Round Rock, Texas; her daughter, Jean Murphy Baldwin, and her husband, George, of Shreveport; her daughter-in-law, Jean Bryant Murphy, of Vacaville, California; her niece, Randy Ellen Norris, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; grandchildren, Mary Kathleen Baldwin, Molly Kristen Baldwin and her fiancé, Peyton Muller, Melissa Murphy, Kyle Murphy and wife, Malorie, Sean Murphy and Brandon Murphy; and great-grandson, Mason Murphy. The family would like to express its most sincere appreciation to Dr. Richard Haynie for 20 years of kind and compassionate care for our mother and grandmother. She considered him to be not only her favorite doctor but also a good friend. We would like to thank the staff of Savannah at The Oaks for providing a safe, comfortable and friendly place for Jean to enjoy the final three years of her life. Special thanks and love are extended to Janice Latvala, Julie Angel, Jeri Baker, Lori Bijou, Stephanie Taylor, Kristi Mims, Beth Baker, all the CNA's and the dining room staff, especially for the unending supply of her favorites: pink lemonade and a single scoop of vanilla ice cream with "not too much" chocolate syrup. The family is also so very thankful for the compassion, devotion and friendship that our Mom and Nana received from her personal caregivers this past year. From the bottom of our hearts, we appreciate who you are and all you've done, Natasha, Charmaine, Rose, Kim, Lisa, Betty Jean and Tempess. We are also most grateful for the strength, compassion and support of Tangela and the rest of the team at Willis-Knighton Hospice. To the Lunch Bunch, Dr. Haynie, the Savannah staff, caregivers, neighbors and friends: Our Mom's and Nana's life was enriched and joyful because of each one of you. For that, we will be forever grateful. Memorials may be sent to The University of Vermont Foundation, 411 Main Street, Burlington, VT 05401 or
