AVILLA — Jeanne L. Hissem, 87, of Avilla died on Monday, June 22, 2015, at Presence Sacred Heart Home. She was born on Feb. 4, 1928, in Avilla to the late James E. and Jessie (Macklin) Padgitt. A lifetime Avilla resident, she was a life member of Calvary United Methodist Church where she served as choir director for several years. On March 1, 1969, she married Frank Tom Hissem. He preceded her in death in 2005. She was a 1946 Avilla High School graduate, and worked at International Harvester for several years, and later retired from Community State Bank in Avilla. She was co-owner along with her husband of Hissem's Photographic Services. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Noble Chapter 122. She was also a life member of the Air Force Association, serving as the secretary of the local Chapter 143 in Fort Wayne for several years, and as state secretary for one year. She volunteered at the VA Hospital in Fort Wayne at special holidays assembling gifts for the veterans. Survivors include a brother, Everitt J. Padgitt of Avilla; a cousin, Betty Pearson of Albion; and stepsons, William D. (Debbie) Hissem of Wisconsin, and John (Becky) Hissem of Colorado. Also surviving are six stepgrandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Estella Jean Hissem, and niece, Diane Padgitt. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 25, 2015, at Presence Sacred Heart Home Chapel, 515 N. Main St., Avilla, with visitation one hour prior. Visitation is also from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2015, at Brazzell Funeral Home, Avilla Chapel, 530 N. Main St., Avilla, with Order of Eastern Star Service at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be at Avilla Cemetery. Memorials are to the Air Force Association or donor's choice.
