Jennie Mae Hager, 96, of Idaho Springs passed away Nov. 26, 2016, in Evergreen, only about 100 yards from where she was born on May 13, 1920, to John Henry Hager and Mae (Crosser) Hager.Jennie was raised by her dad on the family homestead after her mother, Mae, passed away on Jan. 12, 1922. She had two older brothers and one older sister, Gordon Orren Hager born Sept. 19, 1915, Verna Maxine Hager born March 1, 1917, and Albert Lyle Hager born July 6, 1918. She left home to work with the Air Force in Wyoming during World War II in the message center, handling secret messages, although she never decoded messages, and she worked night shift. She then went to work for Western Airlines as a radio dispatcher in Sheridan, Wyo., for 1 1/2 years, then transferred to Salt Lake City, where she worked mostly night shifts for 37 years. While working in Salt Lake City, she would take trips around the world with friends who also worked for Western Airlines. Jennie learned to ski at a young age but said she wasn't the best. She loved to ride horses, but when young, she fell off a horse and hurt her back, which bothered her for the rest of her life.She moved back to Idaho Springs in October 1982, where she purchased a mobile home and then her present home at 914 Miner St. She wanted be near her brother and sister-in-law. Gordon and Myrtle Hager, and also started attending the Catholic church with them. While living in Idaho Springs, she volunteered many years at the Carlson Elementary School library.Jennie would also drive to Wheat Ridge, where she volunteered with Lutheran Hospital Auxiliary starting in 1986, and she put in 6,601 hours.She is survived by her nephews, John and Kenneth Hager (sons of Gordon and Myrtle Hager) of Idaho Springs; Her grand-niece Alethea Arnold of Oregon (granddaughter of Verna Hager Chandler), nephew and niece Roy Hager and Sharon Hager (children of Albert Hager).Hegmann-Kent Funeral Home of Idaho Springs is assisting the family with arrangements.
