Aronson, Jerome "Jerry" Melville Age 87, of Scottsdale, AZ, passed away peacefully on October 7, 2017, with family present. Jerry, an only child, was born on May 20, 1930 in Oakland, California, to Arthur and Tamara Aronson. He attended Sherman School, Marina Jr. High and George Washington High School in San Francisco. In 1955 he married Danièle (née Bourla), with whom he raised two children, Arthur and Vickie. Jerry graduated from UC Berkeley in 1958 with a PhD in botany. He travelled to Leeds, England on a research fellowship and was an assistant professor at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan before joining the plant biology department at Arizona State University in 1966. He taught plant biology and plant physiology, and became a loyal Sun Devil football and baseball fan. In 1983, he secured a sabbatical to Salamanca, Spain, where he and Danièle enjoyed a happy year of making new acquaintances, marveling at the cultural and historical wonders of the "old world," and visiting relatives in France and England. Jerry retired from ASU in 1996 and Danièle passed away the same year. He continued to travel in his retirement. When he met Judy Golis in 2005, he found a cheerful partner-in-travel with whom he shared memorable journeys across the globe. Jerry is remembered for his wry sense of humor, his loyalty, patience, and compassion, and for his commitment to giving back to the ASU community that offered him so much. He will also be remembered for the ubiquitous cigars that he more often chomped than smoked. Jerry was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Danièle, and by his son, Arthur. He leaves behind his daughter, Vickie and her partner Nirit; Judy, his best friend of 12 years; Daniela, his dedicated caregiver; and treasured extended family and friends. A private remembrance will be hosted by family on Sunday, October 29, 2017. Arrangements: Messinger Mortuary.
