Jerry Newton Smith, age 80, of Kingwood, passed away May 1, 2013. He was born on July 15, 1932 in Plainview, Texas, to William Chester and Maudie Lea Newton Smith. In 1950, he joined the US Air Force and was stationed in Newfoundland, where he met his future wife, Ruth. They were married on October 14, 1952, in Pittsburgh, PA.
Jerry was in charge of vehicle maintenance and worked on heavy equipment and aircraft. He was stationed at various bases in the States, as well as two tours in Taiwan. In August of 1972, he retired from the Air Force after proudly serving for 22 years. After moving to Houston, Jerry went to work for Diamond Shamrock (Greens Bayou), and retired from ISK Biotech in '97. After retiring he had many hobbies, including woodwork, yard work, travelling, and generally fixing things.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Ruth Smith, of Kingwood; son, Eddie Smith and wife, Cindy, of Cove; daughter, Melody McDaniel and husband, Rob, of Kingwood; and grandchildren, Jared, Carter and Rachel Smith, and Patrick and Kylie McDaniel; brother, Bill Smith and wife, Herma, of Dallas; and sister, Sammie Ruth Stull of Arizona.
The family received friends at Crespo & Jirrels Funeral Home, 6123 Garth Road, Baytown, TX, 77521, on Sunday, May 5, 2013, from 3-6 p.m. Funeral services were held on Monday, May 6, 2013, at 1 p.m. in the Chapel of Crespo & Jirrels, with Military Honors.
