Mr. Jerry R. Wood of Creston died on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014 at Ashe Memorial Hospital. He was 60.
Mr. Wood was born on Dec. 13, 1953 in West Chester, Pa. to Glenn and Pearl Stanley Wood. Mr. Wood was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Tom Wood.
Mr. Wood is survived by his wife, Betty Lewis Wood; son, Justin Wood and wife Monica of Creston; daughter, Jessica Goodman and husband Billy of West Jefferson; sister, Sherry Lambert and husband Jeff of Creston; seven grandchildren: Mackenzie Wood, Gwyneth Wood, Caitlin Wood, Elizabeth Goodman, Kelsie Goodman, Adam Goodman and Molly Goodman; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Wood enjoyed sports; he played football at Northwest Ashe High School and coached his children in various sports. He loved to collect model race cars and Dallas Cowboys memorabilia. On April 1, 2004 he opened Wood's Grocery. Jerry was a member of Mountain View Missionary Baptist Church and was ordained as a deacon in 2011. He had a giving heart, was always willing to help anyone in need and was there to give you a smile or funny nickname. Most of all, he was a loving and devoted, son, husband, brother, father, grandfather and friend.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014 at the Ashelawn Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Denton Hart, the Rev. Eddie Lewis and the Rev. Brian Weaver. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Jim Greer and the Rev. Lloyd Day officiating.
The family will receive friends from 5 - 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014 at Ashelawn Memorial Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mountain View Missionary Baptist Church.
