It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jimmie Lee Benbow, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Jimmie peacefully passed away on October 20, 2024.
Born on January 24, 1947, in Sumter, South Carolina, and later relocating to Southeast Washington, DC, Jimmie grew up with a passion for Black liberation and a deep love for his community. After graduating from high school, he went on to serve his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he earned commendations for his dedication and courage.
After his service, Jimmie returned to Washington, DC, and became an officer with the Metropolitan Police Department. He served with integrity and bravery until he was injured in the line of duty, a testament to his commitment to keeping the community safe. Even after his injury, he continued to inspire others with his resilience and determination. Mr. Jimmie began his impactful career with the District of Columbia Public School system as a Resource Officer. For over 15 years, he dedicated himself to mentoring and guiding the youth in the community, making a profound difference in their lives. His compassionate approach and unwavering support provided countless students with the encouragement they needed to overcome challenges and pursue their dreams. A beloved mentor and advocate for the African American community, Jimmie played a pivotal role in guiding countless young people toward success, instilling in them the values of hard work, determination, and community. Affectionately known to all as “Mr. Jimmie,” he was a constant source of encouragement and support, dedicated to helping others realize their potential.
Later in life, Jimmie became an entrepreneur, starting his own vending company, Coco Motion L.L.C., in his beloved Anacostia community. He spent countless days promoting unity and uplifting his fellow customers. Jimmie was supported by the esteemed Marion Barry and other Ward 7 councilmembers in his endeavors, reflecting his dedication to fostering community connections and empowering those around him. Jimmie continued his business until he was debilitated by cancer in 2018. Despite the challenges he faced, his spirit remained strong, and he continued to inspire those around him with his strength and determination.
Jimmie is survived by his three daughters, Edith Grant-Decaria (LaVerne), Pamela Smith, and Deven Benbow. He also leaves behind his devoted granddaughter, Tiffani, along with grandchildren Derrell, Khaila, Tyesse, Blake, and Drew; five siblings, [insert sibling names], and a host of cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Luceal Benbow, as well as his siblings, [insert deceased siblings]. He is also preceded by his grandsons, Michael Benbow and Zion Hollingsworth-Hayes.
Jimmie will be remembered for his generosity, dedication to family, and unwavering pride in his community. His spirit lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
