Kuhns, Joan Lawson,81, of Louisville, KY, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children and grandchildren at her home, on Sunday July 16th. Joan was a Louisville native, born on September 8th, 1935. She graduated from Sweet Briar College in 1957. She utilized her gifts of caring for people with a career in teaching and social work. This passion for the care of others extended to volunteering in the JCPS Everyone Reads Program, GED tutoring, Louisville Zoo Docents, St. Matthew's Episcopal Church Habitat for Humanity Program and other church outreach activities. Her support of the KY Natural Lands Trust (KNLT) imbued her commitment and passion for the preservation of natural lands and her love of wildlife, from butterflies to humming birds to rescued critters.Her life was filled with adventure with her family on skiing, sailing, canoeing, cycling, and camping trips. After launching her children, she relished doting on her grandchildren with love, memorable experiences, and her ever presence in their lives. She was the ultimate maker of a warm loving home for her family and many friends.Joan is preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Hampden Clisby Lawson and Elizabeth White Lawson.She is survived by her husband James G. Kuhns, of 60 years, sisters; Gail Hagler (William) and Ann Adamek (Ed Foote), children; James Kuhns Jr. (Nancy), Ellen Craddock (Tom), Anne McCarthy (Shaun), and Hampden Kuhns (Sara), and 9 grandchildren; James III and Lindsey Kuhns, Parker and Lawson Craddock, Will, Samuel, and Alex McCarthy, and Kit and Niya Kuhns. The celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, July 22, at 4:00 pm at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church (330 N. Hubbards Ln, Louisville, KY 40207) with a reception to follow.
