Meighan, Joan Louise (Edson) 76 of Phoenix, AZ passed away on Christmas night, December 25, 2016. She was one of the kindest, most big-hearted and loving of lady's. She was born on August 28, 1940 in New Hampton, IA to Stanley and Frieda Edson. Joan grew up on a farm in Ionia, IA where she attended grade school in a one room school house. She moved to New Hampton for her High School years, graduating in 1958, then on to Wartburg College in Waverly, IA for two years. In 1961 she moved to Phoenix, AZ to study at the College of Education at ASU, where she later graduated from. Shortly after her arrival, her true love Robert Meighan hopped a train and followed her out West and they married October 21. In 1962 they had their daughter Kim and it would take another 30 years for that joy to appear again, this time with the birth of her only grandchild, Zachary. To her, family, faith, teaching and friends were everything. She taught 1st & 2nd graders at Sunland Elementary for over 33 years and after retirement subbed another 10. She was an active member of DKG, Beta Chapter, AASRA, Phoenix/Scottsdale group, and at one time active in RCTA/REA, Queen Esther Chapter 22, Sphinx Court 65 Ladies Oriental Shrine. She'd been a fun-loving member of the Red Hat and the Black and Bling Societies as well. She volunteered at Salvation Army, Child Crisis Nursery and her church tirelessly over the years. She was a fabulous cook, helper, friend, teacher, worry wart, daughter, wife, mother/grandmother, niece, aunt and substitute mom for many. She will be remembered for well-planned parties and vacations, her tasty roast beef and gravy meals, Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners, bright red hair and turquoise rings on every finger. Her bubbly and sparkly personality that matched the bling and sequins that she wore from her head to her toes! She was preceded in death by her parents, Stanley and Frieda Edson and her husband Robert Meighan. She leaves behind her daughter, Kim Meighan, grandson Zachary Goga (Alexis Grossman) all of Phoenix, AZ. She will forever be greatly loved and sorely missed. Visitation will be held on Tuesday 4-6:30PM at Green Acres Mortuary, Scottsdale, AZ. Funeral services will be on Wednesday January 4, 2017, 1:30PM at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Paradise Valley, AZ. In lieu of flowers the family suggests Gloria Dei Lutheran Church or Sunshine Acres.
